An Unforgettable Birthday in Tucson!
For my birthday, Aaron and I decided on a mid-morning venture to the stunning Saguaro National Park, where we planned to hike the beautiful King’s Canyon and Boulder Mine Trails, taking in the breathtaking scenery and enjoying the fresh air. After gearing up and arriving at the trailhead under a beautiful cumulus cloud, we set off to capture the desert landscape. As we hiked away from the vacant parking lot, we encountered a gentle slope heading up the canyon. The morning rays were just beginning to set the far hillside aglow. I was after the shade which assisted my plans for a few macro shots of cacti!
Our hiking plans often change as we encounter gorgeous trails eager to be photographed. I was captivated by the cacti, and it became clear we wouldn’t reach Wassen Peak this time. I can’t help it! I fell in love with the landscape!! The variety of cactus we found was mind boggling - the area so diverse.
What struck me the most as we hiked through the lush, vibrant landscape was the fascinating coexistence and deep reliance of many different species on one another. It was incredible to observe how each creature, plant, and element of nature played a vital role in sustaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem around us. The textures, the colors were jaw-dropping. Some may say the desert landscape is void of life but it is anything but. You just have to take the time to slow down, look for the details and take it in.
As we explored I constantly turned 360 to take in the warming sun, the ever-changing shadows cast upon the cacti. I loved the white tips of the saguaro which stood out in the shade. We continued our hike slowly upward. Alone on the trail to savor the experience!
With increasing winds, we opted to protect our expensive camera equipment from the desert elements and began a descent along the mine trail. Our next stop was to scout out the Bajada Road. I love it when National Parks offer an accessible option for those who can’t hike afoot. Honestly, this driving route had some of the most stunning scenery yet encountered in the park. If you are in the area, we highly recommend driving the dirt road!
My enthusiasm for learning about cactus grew exponentially as we explored. A quick phone call to a beloved family member who lives in Tucson lead us to B and B Cactus Farm for a tour provided by an expert horticulturist! The rest of the day I’ll leave to the video! My birthday this year was certainly something I’ll never forget.
