Step Back in Time With a Trip to Silverton, Colorado!
We LOVE small towns! The lack of hustle and bustle and town folk who are usually excited to share the history of the region and all that their slice of heaven has to offer is refreshing, and Silverton, Colorado was no exception. After our fun trip over the Million Dollar Highway we wound down into this charming little mountain town, treated to spectacular views on a lovely, summer day. The dark clouds overhead threatened rain and the slight cold bite to the wind as it drifted down off the San Juan Mountain range provided a mystique to this alpine, subartic area, but we were prepared to explore, having spotted a coffee shop called Goodies to Go as our first destination in town. We enjoyed chatting with the owner and sampling the scrumptious pastries — so many to choose from!!! Hot coffee in hand, we set out to walk the streets!
There’s a lot of history here so before you explore make sure you check out Silverton’s Chamber of Commerce website for an in depth perspective. As you walk around town you can see remnants of Silverton’s split past depending on which side of the street you are on. The area feels like you’re strolling thru a Hollywood western movie set with the quintessential gravel and dirt streets prominent on the side roads.
Silverton’s main attraction is the varied recreational activities you can enjoy year round, which is the tag line of nearly every town in western Colorado, but I think what sets Silverton apart from other destinations is the remoteness. If you truly want to submerge in nature with minimal intrusion from the crowds, Silverton is your perfect base camp! We highly recommend spending several days here during both summer and winter to enjoy all that this area has to offer. If you are a 14er enthusiast, why not stage in a town that has access to 7 in less than 20 minutes? If snow sports are your game - Silverton boasts the highest ski area in North America! Within minutes of entering this idyllic mountain town we knew we’d come back someday to explore this area in depth as after all, remoteness and off the beaten path is our favorite place to be!
