Enjoy a Birdseye View of Telluride, Colorado: Jud Wiebe Trail

On a recent trip to Colorado, we did something we never do….we didn’t hit the trailhead early. If you follow us on YouTube you know that’s not our norm. We are usually hiking near dawn to ensure the best conditions for wildlife photography/videography and minimal crowds, but this time we decided to switch things up a bit. We were base camping at the Grand Junction KOA for four nights which offered plenty of time to find a long, off-the-grid style hike we covet, so instead, on a day trip to Telluride we opted to visit the town FIRST and then hike. Weird, but I am so happy we did!

After an early morning stroll through stunning Telluride helping out the local economy (you can never have too much hiking gear right?), we decided to grab lunch at Smuggler Union Restaurant and Brewery. We found this lovely farm-to-table, award winning brewpub situated in a historic building off the main thoroughfare near the San Miguel River. We arrived close to noon and I wasn’t sure we’d snag a table, but alas, the terrace was available for al fresco dining with STUNNING views - heck ya! The boys opted for burgers and I had to have the tacos!

As we dined on plates of heaven, a spooky mist rolled in and the wait staff diligently moved to extend the awning over our heads. We highly recommend sitting outside - it was the perfect way to take in the stunning views. While you sip and await your creation - take a look at the head chef’s bio via Trip Advisor. Trust me, you are in for a real treat! Now to hike…

This hike is short and steep, but so worth the effort! We loved that the trailhead was walkable from our truck parked downtown. We recommend you hike clockwise for the best peek-a-boo glimpses of Telluride below. Stop often, turn around and take in the sites! As you climb the gorgeous wildflowers grow more prolific as do the stunning aspen trees.

I think I took one thousand photographs on this hike! Okay some of that was to stop and catch my breath, but hey the excuse worked. AllTrails measures this hike at 3.1 and our mileage confirmed that distance which is an easy day for us - but we are from the PNW and used to ZERO altitude so even beginning at 8,750 in Telluride and then climbing to 10,000 feet takes its toll. Just go slow, have plenty of water, and take ‘camera’ breaks to catch your breath. You’ll want to anyway - don’t rush this hike!

With photography and a casual stroll, this hike took us nearly an hour to reach the top - we spent another 20 minutes capturing more photos. The views were just jaw dropping!

The many waterfalls surrounding Telluride really stand out at the top of Jud Wiebe Trail!

Safety First

This is such a unique hike, even though you feel like you’re miles away from Telluride, it’s literally “just down the hill.” You will have constant cell service which is a bonus in case you have family members who decide not to attempt the steep incline or are more inclined to shop. This hike is enjoyed year round, during the winter months check AllTrails often for trail updates for needed micro spikes, or our fav, Yaktraks! Trek poles would be very beneficial, and as always, make sure to pack the ten essentials! After a couple of hours trekking it’s length, the trail will deposit you right back into town!
