Why Corinth, Mississippi Should be on your Bucket List

To be honest, we didn't plan for Corinth to be a top spot on our list of best small towns to explore; it just happened to be on the way to Tiffin Motorhomes in Red Bay, Alabama. After a week at the lovely Cross City RV Park, which often gets 9 out of 10 stars from reviewers, we’ve added this charming city to our list of places to revisit.

First off Jim the owner of Cross City is a true gem, his relaxed southern hospitality shines as we met each evening on his back porch to exchange pleasantries. Jim is a true historian of the area having grown up on the same acreage his now lovely RV park sits upon and he was genuinely interested in showcasing the hidden areas only the locals know about. The world would be a better place if more people like Jim walked the earth.

Secondly, with plenty of unique shops, eateries, museums and a famous delicacy known as a Slug Burger, we found our days packed with southern charm. We lucked out in our arrival at the beginning of their Christmas festival, taking advantage of a horse-drawn carriage ride as our first stop. The two characters driving the buggy were hysterical to listen to as they recanted stories of the area, bantered back and forth, and gave us a list of the best things to do. What a delight!

No visit to any city is complete without a trip to the Visitor’s Center so after our carriage ride we wandered over to visit with the wonderful staff. Armed with a brochure entitled “60 in 60”, we set out for a one mile walk through the stunning, historic downtown buildings. I won’t spoil it by showing every site we visited but the church was one of our favorites. We soon found ourselves at the iconic Coca Cola museum in Corinth and, even though it was early morning, had to sample a coke float which brought back wonderful memories of my childhood!

Bellies full of ice cream floats, to expend some calories we walked to the nearby Corinth chapter of the Shiloh National Military Park. I continue to be enamored with the history we’ve encountered on this journey and this museum did not disappoint. Other areas that are a must-see are the Confederate Graves, Crossroads Museum, and the Corinth Contraband Camp. For a more immersive experience, make sure you take a day to drive to the Military Park in Shiloh. We recommend sitting through the informational video which plays at the top of every hour. Now the food part……so many wonderful southern foods to sample!

During our week-long visit, we sampled amazing pizzas at a quirky place called Pizza Grocery, the famous Slug Burger at Historic Borroum’s Drugstore, and received a free dozen tamales at the iconic Dilworth’s Tamale Shop. You can’t go wrong with any of those places - but perhaps the most famous local hangout is to belly up to the bar for breakfast at Abe’s Grill.

Now to burn some calories!!! After you’ve explored downtown and learned the fascinating history of this mighty “cross-roads”, venture just out of town to walk the in the footsteps of the Civil War soldiers on the Confederate Siege Lines Trail. It’s a lovely walk through the beautiful woods. Imagine the conditions as they marched along, only the stagnate streams as their drinking source.

This is merely a snapshot of what keeps us enamored with this mighty little town. Check out our video for more sneak peeks of adventures you can experience in the area! Panning for shark teeth? YES!
