Hike to the base of the Buffalo Bill Dam via Hayden Arch Bridge!
We recently moved the RV to Cody, Wyoming, one of our favorite small towns, for a week of exploration. We've been here a few times before, usually to set up a base for hiking, photography, and shopping. Our previous trips were packed, starting at around 4 AM and returning late to the KOA. Now that we live in our RV full-time, we decided to take things slow and explore the area more deeply, discovering local favorites. One such place is the Buffalo Bill Dam. While walking around town, I talked to several locals who recommended it as a less crowded spot for hiking. I had always thought it was just a roadside attraction but found out you can hike directly up river to the dam via the Hayden Arch Bridge!
We arrived at the trailhead around 10am but found plenty of parking on the incline leading away from the bridge. There are about 7-8 spots available IF people snug up close and don’t hog lots of real estate. The trail is accessible to all - strollers, bikers, walkers, wheelchairs, you name it! It’s the perfect spot to bring kids or pets to burn off some energy. The ‘trail’ is actually the old road to Yellowstone, free of vehicle traffic, wide open and gorgeous! Bring water, dress for the weather, and be prepared to stop often along the 4 miles (total mileage out and back) to take in the breathtaking scenery. The vibrant colors were stunning and it was fun trying to spot the rock climbers ascending the steep cliffs.
After navigating through the tunnel, which we learned was painstakingly hand-dug by the original builders of the dam, you will come to a fork in the path. The left, lower trail extends onward to reveal stunning views that look directly into the base of the impressive structure of the dam, while the steep, upper incline to the right leads you up to a locked gate situated at the visitor’s center. We highly recommend exploring both paths to experience the diverse and breathtaking views they offer! If you happen to get lucky, a worker may notice you at the gate and unlock it for you, granting access to the fascinating visitor center. If not, walk back to your vehicle and make sure you drive to the visitor’s center and watch the free video presentation to learn about the dam! If anything - watch our video below for a sneak peak on what you’ll find.
